Ohio Continuing Education Requirements and License Lookup
Ohio law states home inspectors must complete at least 14 hours of continuing education EACH YEAR. Each yearly interval starts at the anniversary of your initial license date. If your initial license date was 2/9/2022, you are required to complete at least 14 hours of CE between 2/9/2022 and 2/9/2023 and at least 14 more hours during each subsequent yearly interval. Extra hours in one year DO NOT carry over to future years.

Continuing Education FAQ
What is the latest I can submit my license renewal application?
As long as your application is postmarked (or walked in to the Division's Reynoldsburg, OH office)
before your license renewal date, it is considered on time and you can continue to perform home inspections while waiting for your
application to be processed. This means you could complete your continuing education hours for the last year of your renewal period the day before
your license renewal date and still get it mailed on time. We hand out course completion certificates at the end of class so you will
have the paperwork you need. We don't advise you to wait till the last minute, but it is possible.
Can I complete all my required CE classes in the last year of each three year license renewal period?
No, the law requires you to complete at least 14 hours of continuing education each year.
Each yearly interval starts at the anniversary of your initial license date.
For example, if your Ohio home inspector initial licensing date is Oct. 31, 2021, you must complete 14 hours
of approved continuing education by Oct. 31, 2022, another 14 hours by Oct. 31, 2023 & another 14 hours by
Oct. 31, 2024 for a total of 42 hours. You cannot complete 42 hours in one year
(i.e., between Oct. 31, 2023 & Oct. 31, 2024).
If I complete more than 14 hours in one year, can I carry the extra hours forward to the next year?
No, the law states 'at least 14 hours each year'. The Division of Real Estate does not allow you to
carry forward extra hours to the following year.
Licensees may complete more than 14 hours each year, however, ONLY 14 HOURS PER YEAR WILL COUNT.
What are the consequences if I don't get 14 hours in one of my years but make it up in the following year?
On February 11, 2022 I asked Edward Woodruff of the Division of Real Estate & Professional Licensing
that very question. His answer: "A final decision still needs to be made or determined". At some point they will decide.
If this happens to you, our advice would be to contact the Division of Real Estate & Professional Licensing right away to
try to resolve it. I would not wait until you submit your renewal application to find out what (if any) the consequences are.
What classes count as continuing education?
The education provider and the specific class must be approved by the State of Ohio Division of Real Estate
for home inspector continuing education.
All continuing education classes offered by Home Inspection Training Institute of Ohio have been approved by the
Division of Real Estate for continuing education hours (unless specifically noted in the class description).
How does the Division of Real Estate know what classes I have taken?
The education provider will give you a Certificate of Completion at the end of an
approved continuing education class. You will submit a copy of this certificate with your license renewal application.
Home Inspection Training Institute of Ohio hands out certificates at the end of each class and allows you to print copies of your
certificates at any time from our website.
