A Day In The Life Of A Home Inspector

Most home inspectors work for themselves. A home inspection including transportation and report writing typically takes five to six hours. There are of course other duties to maintaining your business like marketing and general office work. Most home inspectors perform one inspection per day but many do two per day. Here is a list of a typical day's tasks:

  • Arrive at property and perform the day's home inspection.
  • Meet your client at the property toward the end of the home inspection.
  • Review the findings with your client after completing the inspection.
  • Leave the seller a note, lock up, and return to your office/home.
  • Write (or review) today's inspection report.
  • Email the report to your client and their real estate agent.
  • Receive calls from potential new clients.
  • Call the listing agent/showing service to schedule new inspections.
  • Enter new inspection data into your software.
  • Email your pre-inspection agreement to new inspection clients.
  • Spend some time on your marketing plan to ensure your phone continues to ring.
  • Take care of office work like paying bills, balancing your checkbook, and scheduling your continuing education classes.
